How to Choose a High-Quality Camera on a Budget
February 8, 2023

High-quality cameras are generally expensive, and choosing the right one to invest in can be quite a task. It would help to determine how much you’d like to spend and check out the options in that price range.

Fortunately, many brands have great cameras, so you are bound to get one within your budget. Consider these factors when choosing your camera:

· Camera Types

If you are a newbie, you must understand that several camera types exist. The four main types include:

  • Point and shoot – they are compact, convenient, and the best option for beginners. They are easy to operate with automatic modes for photographers with little camera experience
  • Bridge cameras- they are slightly superior to point and shoot – you get better control as the camera has adjustable settings
  • DSLRs – fancy-looking, classic cameras with long lenses and many buttons. These cameras have advanced features and give photographers more control and creative options.
  • Mirrorless cameras – they are DSLRs in smaller, more compact bodies.

· Camera Resolution – The Megapixel Saga

You will find a point-and-shoot and a DSLR camera with a similar MP count. While the MP is the same, the camera capabilities are wildly different. High MP cameras mean you can take detailed photos or videos without pixelation. However, the camera type will ultimately affect your final product’s quality.

· Performance and Speed

Cameras with interchangeable lenses are generally better performers than compact cameras. Unlike their compact counterparts, they can track subjects better, focus faster, and take a series of photos per second. Cameras with at least 5fps (frames/pictures per second) are good enough.

· Image Stability

When choosing a camera, get one with image stabilization. It is especially essential if you plan to use the camera with a long zoom lens that is hard to keep steady. Look out for IBIS (sensor-shift stabilization) or EIS (Electronic image stabilization) in the features. IBIS feature is the best as it works with any lens.

· Video Shooting Capabilities

While many cameras now offer 4K Ultra HD resolution, high-quality ones give cinematic filmmaking video features. A good quality camera should have at least 24 to 30 fps. Cameras with 60 fps are perfect for slow-motion or smooth playback. Be cautious of cameras labeled 4K without indicating the fps rate. It could be a small number hidden in the fine print.

· Shock, Dust, and Waterproof Cameras

You can choose a shock, water, and dustproof camera depending on the environment you intend to use it in. Note that splashproof does not mean waterproof. A weatherproof camera can survive some splashes if the buttons are covered, but it will get damaged if submerged. A waterproof camera implies that it can be submerged and even used for underwater photography and videography.
